OBSERVING REFUGEE SHABBAT
March 5 Torah Service

The ways in which a people can be swiftly subject to displacement has become wrenchingly clear these past weeks. ORH joins with synagogue and havurot across North American in observing REFUGEE SHABBAT this weekend, beginning with a Shabbat morning service of song, prayer and reflection led by Rabbi Liz.

Later on Saturday, at 8pm, all are invited to log in to a special All-Canadian Refugee Shabbat Havdalah, hosted by JIAS-Toronto. Mark the beginning of a new week while showing commitment to tikkun olam through supporting refugees -  register here to attend.

Then on Sunday March 6 at 1:30pm, join HIAS & JIAS for an international panel exploring how the global Jewish community is addressing the world refugee crisis -  click here for more information & to register.

We encourage those who do not have a copy of our prayer book, Kol Haneshamah Shabbat Vehagim, to download a PDF of the Shabbat portions of the prayerbook (below). We will refer to siddur page numbers in the chat, but will not be screen sharing siddur pages during the service.

OrH Zoom protocols:

1. Please ensure that you sign in to the service using a screen name that clearly identifies you (i.e., first and last name or household name only). If you cannot be identified you may be removed from the service.

2. Please ensure that you are muted at all times, unless you are asked to unmute.

3. If you plan to call in to the service using one of the telephone access numbers, you  must send an email to techteam@orh.ca in advance of the service indicating the phone number you will use to sign in. If you cannot be identified you may be removed from the service.

4. During the service, you are welcome to use the “chat” function, whether in response to an invitation from the leader, or a reflection that arise for you from the prayers, songs, or teaching. We have always been a community that values the prayer leader’s platform, or “bimah” not as a “high place” (its literal meaning) but as a shared space. However, we ask that you please be judicious and thoughtful with the substance and timing of your chat interventions.

If you have any questions or challenges around using Zoom, please reach out to techteam@orh.ca. We look forward to greeting you in our virtual lobby and enjoying Shabbat together.
