A Message and Invitation from Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation

Greetings -- we hope this message arrives with you in good health, and as much peace of mind as possible in this era. We’re reaching out with a special invitation for a special Shavuot gathering. It’s next Friday, May 29, at 6pm, late on Shavuot afternoon.

Your own amazing Rabbi Liz will join us from Adat Shalom for a rare reading of the Scroll of Ruth -- in Hebrew, with traditional festival trop -- as a part of our communities’ Shavuot celebrations. We ask you all to join us on Zoom for this reading, in which Rabbi Liz will give voice to Naomi, the story’s tragic and ultimately redeemed matriarch. Rabbi Liz will join Rabbi Rachel, and several Adat Shalom members, each with their own part in the ‘cast’, to bring the text alive for this uncommon season. If ever there was a time we needed to hear the messages of powerful love, resilience, repair and hope, this must surely be that time.

We’ll follow the reading of Ruth with our own Shabbat and festival mini-maariv (which includes your rabbi’s rabbinical school classmate, Adat Shalom’s Rabbi Fred) – we warmly welcome you to remain with us for those prayers.

We think it’s a capital idea, to unite Ottawa and Washington DC! We’re delighted to connect our two Reconstructionist communities, and hope to see you in the Zoom room, next Friday.

L’Shalom,
Rabbi Hazzan Rachel Hersh and Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobb

Join Rabbi Rachel, special guest Rabbi Liz Bolton, and a whole “cast” of Ruth characters to hear the full Hebrew text chanted as a play. Adat Shalomers lend their voices to tell the story the way it’s meant to be heard, in honor of the Shavuot festival. Followed by Shabbat prayers and songs.
