Reparations and the Palestinian Right of Return as Teshuva for Nakba
Tuesday, 29 August, 2023 • 12 Elul 5783
8:00 PM - 9:00 PMZoomDear Friends,
Please join us Tuesday, August 29 at 8:00 p.m. EST, 7:00 p.m. CST, 5:00 p.m. PST. (Please note this new date.) We are honored to host journalist Peter Beinart. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Zionist militias and the Israeli army expelled some 750,000 Palestinians from the territories that became the State of Israel. Palestinian society, especially its urban, intellectual, and commercial elements, was destroyed. Most of those who became refugees committed no acts of violence against the Jewish community. The Nakba did not end in 1948. Their displacement and the expropriation of their lands continues to this day. As the Jewish new year approaches, in this season of collective teshuvah, or returning to the path of spiritual and moral growth, self-education, and justice, we contemplate what Jews – in Israel and in the Diaspora – can and should do to rectify this historic wrong.
Peter Beinart is editor-at-large of Jewish Currents and hosts the The Beinart Notebook, a weekly series of newsletters and interviews. He is a professor of journalism and political science at the Newmark School of Journalism at the City University of New York. A former editor of The New Republic, he has also written for Haaretz, Time, The New York Times, The New York Review of Books and The Guardian. He is also the author of three books including The Crisis of Zionism.
