Guest Speaker @8:15pm - Carolyn Whitzman: "Home Truths: Fixing Canada's Housing Crisis"

No matter who you are or where you live in Canada, you have probably been affected by the high cost of housing. You might be trying to find a smaller and more accessible home in the community you have lived in for most of your life, deciding to move an hour away from the big city where you work because you can’t find a home you can afford, or stuck in a home without enough room for you or your family, living with the fear of being evicted. House prices and rents are increasing at rates that are well beyond affordability of average income people, with millions of households paying more than they can afford, hundreds of thousands at risk of evictions, tens of thousands homeless… Canada’s housing system is a mess. How can this mess be fixed?

“Home Truths” provides an overview of how Canada’s housing crisis can be solved. I review past policy mistakes, highlights international best practice, and gathers ideas from developers, advocates, researchers, politicians, and planners, to provide a guide to how a basic need like “the right to housing” can become reality.
