Thursday, 30 September, 2021 24 Tishrei 5782

9:00 AM - 11:00 AMZoom

Join us to help mark the National Truth and Reconciliation Day

On September 30, the National Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa is taking active steps to honour First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people who are survivors of Federal and religious policies of assimilation.

This year, given the findings of unmarked graves of First Nation children who were killed and who died from neglect, recognizing September 30, which was originally known as Orange Shirt day, is even more significant. We are compelled to take action.

To mark this important day, the Federation is honoured to have Bob Watts facilitate a commemoration entitled: “The National Truth and Reconciliation Day - Symbolic Gesture or Systemic Change?” for Jewish professionals and clergy of Ottawa.

Please join us, Thursday, Sept. 30

at 9 am via Zoom.

An expert in Indigenous policy, negotiations, conflict resolution and reconciliation, Bob Watts is the Vice President of Indigenous Relations at NWMO and an Adjunct Professor and Distinguished Fellow at Queen’s University, where he developed one of the first graduate-level courses on reconciliation in the country.

He is from the Mohawk and Ojibway Nations and resides at Six Nations Reserve, Ontario. Bob carries and honours his Ojibwe Spirit Name, Kinoozishingwak (Tall Pine) and is a member of the Bear Clan.

There can be no reconciliation without truth and acknowledging this dark chapter of Canada’s history is a necessary step in this important process.

Looking forward to learning together on September 30 at 9 am.
