* Tallit bag FOUND in the Glebe. A purple velvet tallit bag, with tallit and kipah inside, was recently found in the Glebe. The name on the kipah is Daniel Shulkin with a Bar Mitzvah date of 2003 or 2004. * A talk by Gershon Shafir - author and esteemed academic, Tuesday, November 14 at 7pm, Soloway Jewish Community Centre, Hosted by Canadian Friends of Peace Now. Admission free: donations gratefully accepted. Gershon Shafir is professor of sociology at the University of California-San Diego, past president of the Israel Studies Association and author of a number of books on Israel. His latest work is: A Half Century of Occupation: Israel, Palestine and the World’s Most Intractable Conflict. Prof. Shafir’s new book will be on sale at the event.
* Dr. Avinoam Patt, Philip D Feltman Professor of Modern Jewish History and Associate Director at the Maurice Greenberg Centre for Judaic Studies, University of Hartford, CT, will be speaking at Saint Paul University, November 10, 10 am on ‘After Auschwitz: Jewish Theological and Religious Responses to the Holocaust.’ This lecture is NOW OPEN to the public. * Tamir’s Fashion Show. TAMIR is staging a FASHION SHOW, featuring its participants, showing off their grace and style on the runway, with the generous support of companies in the fashion world. The event will be held at the CANADIAN WAR MUSEUM, on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, with cocktails at 6:30, the show at 7:30, followed by desserts, all catered by Creative Kosher Catering. TAMIR will also honour Cantor Daniel Benlolo that evening, to thank him for all his wonderful work with participants over 15 years. * The Nazi Titanic. Join us as acclaimed author and speaker Robert Watson tells the lesser known story of a German luxury liner that during the Second World War was transformed from a barrack transport, to the star of a "Titanic" propaganda film, and finally bombed while housing thousands of prisoners in the final days before liberation. Unearthing forgotten documents, Watson's riveting account of this tragic story is becoming known as one of the last major tragedies of the Holocaust. * Musica Ebraica. As days get shorter, thoughts gradually turn to candles, latkes and dreidles. And to put you in the mood, Musica Ebraica presents a Chanukah concert of songs light and darkness, blessings and gratitude under the baton of Rabbi Elizabeth Bolton, its new conductor. Drivers needed for Jewish Family Services program: We have 3 clients requiring transportation in order to attend an Adult Day Program for dementia-sufferers at JFS on Carling Ave., Wednesdays from 11:00am – 3:00pm. Ideally, we will find 1 driver to bring 2 passengers from the Glebe and Byward Market areas TO the program, another to bring 1 passenger in Hunt Club, and either the same or another 2 drivers to RETURN them home afterwards. The Semer Ensemble will be giving a performance of Rescued Treasure in commemoration of Kristallnacht, Thursday evening, November 9, 7:30-9:30 pm. A Treasury of Jewish music almost forgotten: repertoire from 1930s Berlin recorded by Hirsch Lewin on the Semer label later destroyed by the Nazis on this day in 1938. The collection, painstakingly reconstructed sixty years later from private collections around the world, is given life anew by the virtuosic Semer Ensemble. Please join the Multifaith Housing Initiative on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Ottawa City Hall, the Jean Pigott Place, to celebrate National Housing Day. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Lindy Samson, Chief of Staff and Chief Medical Officer at CHEO. The celebration will start with sacred Aboriginal drumming, followed by presentation from Muslim, Jewish, Baha’i, Hindu and Christian traditions, including our own Rabbi Liz Bolton, and presentation of awards for the winning Tulipathon banners. The afternoon will end with a lively performance by the Colour of Diversity Marimba Players and refreshments.
