Guest Speaker Dylan Suher@ 8:15 pm, speaking on “The Jews of Kaifeng”
The Jews of Kaifeng
The Kaifeng Jewish community is the oldest Jewish community in China for which we have concrete evidence, dating back to the Song dynasty (~11th century CE). The story of the rise, disappearance (?), and revival of the community provides an opportunity to think about the history of China, the history of Judaism, the problems facing minorities and the practice of religion in the People’s Republic of China, and perhaps even to reflect on our own Jewish identities.
Dylan Suher received his PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University in 2020. He has taught modern East Asian history, Asian film, and modern Chinese/Sinophone literature at McGill University, the University of Hong Kong, the University of Washington, Tacoma, and Harvard University.
