Shabbat Morning Kehillah Service
Saturday, October 20, 2018 • 11 Cheshvan 5779
9:45 AM - 12:15 PMNOW Room, lower levelThe third Saturday morning of the month features a service with an alternative approach. Each Kehillah Service features a short musically-driven service and a potpourri of activities led by OrH members and Rabbi Liz, addressing a theme or concept related to the season, or the weekly torah portion. Following a closing gathering that include the opportunity to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish, we’ll enjoy a delicious communal pot-luck Kiddush luncheon.
This month's theme:
Lekh-Lekha: Jewish Journeys, Human Journeys
There are so many connections and parallels with the story of Avram hearing and heeding the call to change everything about his life – to leave his homeland, his birthplace and his parent’s house to become a “stranger in a strange land.”
Tefilat Shirah – Rabbi Liz and guitarist Howard Kaplan lead opening and closing segments with joyous song and prayer.
“Go Forth …” – Stories that reflect the powerful opening verse from our Torah portion – “Go forth from your native land, from your birth place, and from your father’s home …” We’ll hear from members Jean Hanson and Diana Ralph about their family journeys, and study the verse along with a beautiful musical midrash.
Break-Out Activities – Choose Between:
Re-Storying Your Journey – Sarah Waisvisz will guide participants in a short writing practice about heeding the call, perhaps into the unknown, using narratives around journeys, loss and resilience, departures, arrivals;
Re-create the Stories! Be a part of an interactive Match-Up game with Machaneh Shabbat families exploring characters in Jewish history and their colourful journeys, led by our educator Jenny Burns.
