Jewish Mindfulness Meditation - Unbookclub

Jewish Mindfulness Meditation - Unbookclub

The Mindful Meditation Jewish Learning group will hold an unbookclub for the 2016/17 (5776/77) cycle for the spiritually adventurous.  Three rich books on aspects of Jewish spiritual learning and practice are on the menu for two sessions each (see below).  We’ll delve into ways our tradition guides us both as individuals and within community.  The sessions will be participatory through readings, structured exchange in small groups or dyads, and large group sharing.  Participants are encouraged to have read the corresponding book prior to meeting to optimize the encounter’s opportunities.

Here’s a tidbit adapted from Increasing Wholeness by Elie Kaplan Spitz:

In an address to the World Economic Forum, Bill Gates said, “There are two great forces of human nature:  self-interest and caring for others,” and the greatest success is achieved when a person is driven by a “hybrid engine” of the two.

Our service in the world relies on the four aspects of our inner life:  body, mind, heart and spirit.  We simultaneously tap our conscience and reach beyond ourselves, envisioning the broadest perspective while drawing values from our core.  The more broadly we define the boundaries of self, the more profound our purpose and the greater our identification with God as caring Creator.  Each person longs for contact, compassion, and comprehension.  When seeking to act from God’s point of view we increase the odds of enduringly useful action, while humbly knowing that we are not God and are simply trying our best.
